iPhone and Hosted Exchange Server

30 Jun

OK…So the iPhone is less than a week old. While a gadget geek at heart I don’t often jump on the bandwagon of all leading edge technology. But truth be told I purchased an iPhone…not for myself mind you…but for my wonderful wife who is, shall we say, challenged in the ways of time management. So my justfication begins on how I can somehow managed to pry myself from the wonderful integration of Windows Mobile and our hosted Exchange server and somehow bring an iPhone into my daily use. So begins my mission on getting my hosted MS Exchange account working well on an

Let’s start by identifying my hosting provider: 1and1. They offer very competitive rates for hosted exchange accounts which works well for the company I work for. The only issue is their outgoing SMTP port is not 25. It took me a few hours
to realize this before calling tech support. Luckily I got a hold of a tech rep I could actually ask a technical question to instead of throwing them off their scripted routine. Long story short I asked if they used a non-standard SMTP port and
he said that if port 25 didn’t work then I could try 587. I tested this on Windows Mail in Vista and Tunderbird and both worked! Now back to the iPhone…here is the quick guide:
