Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron on HP nw8240

After many and I mean many attempts at getting X Windows installed on my nw8240 I am very pleased to see that the latest Ubuntu 8.04 release works flawlessly even running Compiz 3D effects! Previously the default driver would not work properly and drive the LCD at a different refresh rate all but preventing it from being used for anything useful.

The ATI 3D Fire card inside the nw8240 requires the propriary ATI drivers to be installed prior to activating the Compiz effects but it is worth installing to have the 3D effects which I’m convinced makes me more productive by dividing my tasks into separate working windows. I’m not of the open source camp that it’s all open source or nothing at all. Linux has a lot going for it and is a great desktop operating system and has come a long, long way in the past 5 or so years. The stability of Linux on different hardware platforms is wonderful and enables a lot of options for aging hardware and even optimizing cutting edge hardware and software platforms for squeeking out the most performace for your dollar.
